The global human rights community has been growing in numbers in recent years as the Internet becomes an ever more important aspect of the work completed by major human rights groups across the planet.
One of the driving forces behind the growing number of members of the human rights community has been the Oslo Freedom Forum, which is an annual event taking place in Norway bringing together prominent members of the human rights community and a range of celebrities, broadcasters, and politicians to discuss the latest human rights issues facing the world.
The Oslo Freedom has been developed by Thor Halvorssen’s Human Rights Foundation and uses the latest technology to tell the stories of the many speakers at the event taking place in the same room as the Nobel Peace prize is awarded each year. Speeches and seminars are broadcast over the Internet and a vast resource of archived materials from the Oslo Freedom Forum dating back to the first event held in 2009 can be accessed Online; the Oslo Freedom Forum attracts many new members to the human rights community as the event looks to discuss the largest issues facing the world in terms of maintaining democracy and the basic freedoms we should all have available.
Where the Oslo Freedom Forum seeks to attract new members to the human rights community the Frontera Fund focuses its human rights work on the Mexican border and the southwest of the U.S. The Frontera Fund was developed by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin after the two journalists were subjected to an illegal arrest and detention in the early part of the 21st century; Jim Larking and Michael Lacey had been working on the actions of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and faced calls from a Grand Jury to reveal their notes on events. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were arrested in 2007 after revealing the Grand Jury was investigating the actions of Sheriff Arpaio.
The two journalists have developed the Frontera Fund as part of the financial settlement reached for their illegal incarceration and now seek to fight human rights injustices committed along the Mexican border with the U.S. Much of the work of the Frontera Fund is completed to raise awareness of the problems facing immigrants along the Mexican U.S. border and have recently been seeking ways of publicizing what are seen as illegal acts by U.S. immigration services. The Frontera Fund also seeks to ensure the cases of those who are illegally detained, such as so-called “Dreamers” living in southwest states remain a priority for local and national news organizations.
